With vehicles running in dusty conditions with temperatures of about 35°C and with heavy loads, the company wanted to reduce maintenance costs and vehicle downtime by extending its engine oil-drain interval and reducing the frequency of bearing component replacement.
It was recommended that the company should switch to Shell Rimula R4 X diesel engine oil and Shell Gadus S2 V220 multipurpose grease.
Using Shell Rimula R4 X it was established that it could double its engine oil-drain interval from 250 to 500 hours while maintaining vehicle protection. Since changing to Shell Gadus S2 V220, the company has experienced fewer wheel bearing failures and consequent repair costs.
During the trial, several factors were assessed including load, temperature, filters, filter ratings, lubricant viscosity and viscosity index. The energy consumption data was recorded by a highly accurate power monitor.
The results of the trial showed that using Shell Tellus S4 ME in the two hydraulic motors reduced their energy consumption by the equivalent of 5.27% per annum, which equates to NZD$20000 a year.
The company also benefited from extended oil-drain intervals and reduced labour costs and downtime. They also expect to extend equipment life.
