With a focus is on injection-moulded plastic cases and trays for DVDs and similar products, the company wanted to reduce the operating costs of its injection-moulding machine, in particular, its energy consumption.
They switched to Shell Tellus S4 ME 46 hydraulic fluid, which offers improved energy efficiency for hydraulic systems.
Upon analysis, it was found that the machine’s energy consumption was reduced by about 4%. In addition, because Shell Tellus S4 ME 46 provides a longer fluid-drain interval, the company also anticipates making savings in hydraulic fluid consumption and maintenance costs of 12%.
The company was experiencing high operational costs because of the poor performance and low efficiency of its existing lubricants. Operators needed to grease the casting machine every 75 hours, which generated a significant loss in production and increased operating costs.
A high base oil viscosity grease, Shell Gadus S3 V460 was recommended. Made with a lithium complex soap thickener, this product resists water washout, copes well in high temperatures and withstands continuous vibrations and shocks, which makes it is particularly suitable for the heavy-duty factory operations.
As a result of switching to Shell Gadus S3 V460, the company extended the greasing intervals for the casting machine from 75 to 250 hours (an increase of 333%). This resulted in decreased maintenance costs and lubricant consumption, and increased production time through trouble-free operation resulting in total annual savings of NZD$5,300,000 through the elimination of production downtime.
