Detroit Diesel Series 60

Originally released in 1987 the Series 60 was the first fully electronically controlled heavy-duty diesel engine manufactured. Today there have been over 740,000 series 60 engines sold, many of them still running with well over 1 million km’s on the clock.

What makes the Series 60 engine so reliable is our constant engineering advances and our commitment to ensuring that you are our partner in engine development through regular feedback and engine monitoring. Each Series 60 engine is equipped with a high efficiency wastegate turbocharger and pulsed recovery exhaust manifold to provide enhanced driveability and fuel efficiency. The forged steel pistons allow the top ring to be placed much closer to the top of the piston, reducing the dead volume above the top ring, thus reducing emissions and improving fuel economy, which assists with the overall lifespan of your engine.

When it comes to performance, the Series 60 can be classed as one of the lightest of the big block engines. Providing constant high torque over a 1200-1500 rpm band, the Series 60 provides rated, or better, power over an extended speed range. We can also provide engineering application assistance and comprehensive simulation tools to enable the optimum selection of engine and truck configurations to suit.

The Series 60 engine is the acknowledged fuel economy leader in the heavy-duty diesel market. The combination of advanced combustion, overhead cam, high efficiency turbocharger and industry leading electronics has led to enviable fuel economy and performance leadership.

The Series 60 is an engine incorporating very simple design aspects. This simple design philosophy provides for reduced parts, easier serviceability and reduced maintenance requirements. This means that the Series 60 is cheaper to operate, lasts longer and costs less to service, thus reducing down time.

DDEC (Detroit Diesel Electronic Control) is the industry leading electronic control system available today The fourth generation of DDEC is now standard equipment on all Series 60 engines. In addition to standard features such as multiple horsepower ratings and new 795 multi level Jake brake, we also offer optional fleet management information and fuel economy information.

When you combine all of the features of the Series 60 it is not surprising that drivers have become accustomed to overall superior performance, durability and reliability.
